Personal Effects

Toiletries

In Long Term Care, basic toiletry items such as hand soap and body lotion are provided. Nevertheless, residents are more than welcome to bring in preferred items from home.

Dentures/ Glasses/ Hearing Aid
Please make sure that your dentures, hearing aids and/or glasses are marked for identification prior to the day of your admission day if this hasn’t already been done. We are not responsible for lost items.

Incontinence Briefs
Residents who require incontinence products will be assessed by trained members of our nursing staff to ensure that you receive a product that is best suited to your needs. Should you prefer to use your own product, please discuss with the Nurse.

Electrical
• The Electrician must certify all electrical equipment (such as hair dryers, TVs etc.) before it can be used.
• One television up to a maximum size of 21 inches (measurement diagonally one side of the TV to the other) can be brought in. It must be approved by the Electrician before it can be used. Head sets are required so that other resident/patients are not disturbed.
• Stereo and computer equipment need to be discussed with the Director as space may be limited. The systems need to be small, contained units with headphones. They must also be certified safe by the Electrician before use.
• Humidifiers, small room heaters, heating pads and microwaveable bean bags for heating pads are not allowed for safety reasons.

Furniture
• One reasonably sized chair may be brought in. We recommend chairs covered with leather or vinyl so that spills of food or drinks can be easily cleaned. If the chair has a fabric cover, it must be cleaned prior to being brought in and then must be maintained in a clean condition by the family. Chairs that are difficult to clean may require approval of the Supervisor of Housekeeping.
• St. Joseph’s Health Centre cannot be responsible for the maintenance or cleaning of personal items brought into the facility. If furniture is in poor condition or soiled, family members will be asked to remove it.
• Fire regulations do not allow you to bring in your own drapes or mattress.
• Carpets or small rugs should not be brought in as they could cause falls and risk your safety and the safety of others.
• All furniture should be labeled.
• St. Joseph’s Health Centre cannot accept the responsibility for your personal blankets, sheets or pillows that are brought into the facility.
• We recommend a minimal number of small keepsakes in your room as it is difficult for housekeeping to keep clean and avoid breaking them. We highly encourage you to keep these items in your memory box located outside your room.
• Personal belongings which require stacking on shelves can become a safety hazard and need to be discussed with the Director.

Please make sure that your dentures, hearing aids and/or glasses are marked for identification

Telephones
There are telephones in each neighbourhood that you may use; however, you can also arrange to have a personal line installed in your bedroom.

If you would like your own telephone, you can activate the service in your room by contacting Bell Canada and our Business Office directly. Once the telephone is in service, Bell Canada will bill you directly for the cost of installation and any subsequent monthly or long-distance charges. To make a long distance call from a neighbourhood phone you will need a calling card.

Wheelchairs / Assistive Devices
After admission, an occupational therapist or a physiotherapist will do an assessment to determine whether your safety, mobility or independence could be improved with the use of assistive devices such as a wheelchair or walker. If you need new or additional equipment, the staff can assist you with the process of getting the appropriate device.
